Story and photos by

Andy Cohen

I know for a fact that the owners of the KLR 6-Fitty will sport wood over this new muffler.  I know this in my heart, ya wanna know why?  Cuz I did.

This new Big Gun Quiet Series muffler system is Bitchin'.  The pictures tell the tale and once you get past my ramblings you'll see for yourself.

Mike and his staff have been busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest.  The new muffler isn't just quiet, it's mighty fine looking too.  There have been a few refinements since the last time you may have gazed upon a Big Gun muffler and I was careful to get some good shots for you readers at home.

Originally I was just going to add on to the original story but when I got to Big Gun, Mike and Paul had an earful for me, so...I decided to do a completely different story on the Quiet Series and make it a stand alone tech/product review.  I apologize if you feel this may be a waste of your time, but if you have a Big Gun now feel free to skip ahead to the product pictures and look at the new features of the muffler.

After Carter installed the new muffler and Mike finished with the sound level meter and I got done taking pictures, I rode the bike back to my place in San Berdoo, roughly 26 miles from The Big Gun offices and I gotta tell ya the new Quiet Series is just that, quiet.

Mike was quick to point out before I headed off to lands unknown that I would notice a difference in power, especially going from a full on race muffler to a street oriented Quiet Series and he was right.  As compared to the race muffler, there is a difference you can feel.  But if you are replacing your stock muffler, the difference will still be night and day.

Hey everybody meet Carter.  Carter is a racer and was going to race Supercross for the first time this weekend.  Good thing I got him to do this install before the race.

Carter started by loosening the center clamp near the rear master cylinder (yes Stu I found it). After that he loosened the headpipe (below) and the rear hangers.

I had literally just got off the freeway and parked out front of the Big Gun offices when Carter started on the bike, hence the need for the rag.  Ouch!  Those pipes get a touch warm.

The naked KLR. With everything removed it's time to unwrap the new pipe and get it on!

Laying in wait, the new Big Gun Quiet Series is kissin' cousin to the race muffler, the exterior look is where the similarities end however.

Ok, here is where it starts to get interesting.  The new Quiet Series and race mufflers now sport a new Billet Aluminum Tail cap/downspout with a rolled edge.

More on that in a minute.

Here is where the big change has been made, this is the old school muffler.  The end you are looking at is the intake, notice there are only two Allen's per side?  (there are two on the other side, take my word for it)

Taa Daa!  The next generation Big Gun mufflers now come with three rivets per side and one on top and bottom as well to keep the end from coming loose.

Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

Not only does the new Big Gun muffler have new tail cap, but they also have a brand new aerospace ceramic coating, Hey pay attention the Big Gun mufflers are ceramic coated on the inside as well!

I'll betchadidntknowthat!

Yeah, yeah, I know the Big Gun has always had a ceramic coating on it right?

This is new, very new from what I'm told, Mike did a great deal of research on ceramic coatings and the same type of coating they use on Top Fuel Funny Car headers is the same stuff they use on the muffler that should be on your bike.

Pretty sexy huh?  Definitely a 10 on the drool factor

They say the proof is in the pudding, this reading was taken at 3 feet away from the muffler at roughly eye level with the exhaust exit.  RPM's were at half of redline.  The meter is reading 90 decibels.

The spark arrestor and ring.

The new roll tip downspout is mig welded to the billet insert for the tailcap.

This is new also, the tailcap is real billet.  This is art.

More new stuff!  The braze marks you see on the baffle tube are where the half moon shaped metal inserts are to deflect much of the noise.  You get a better idea by looking at the photo below.

You've probably seen this before, packing material, I found this crap in the trash can next to the workbench in the shop.  Another revolution at Big Gun is how the mufflers are packed.  Take a look at the accompanying pictures and you start to get a pretty good idea of the quality that goes into each Big Gun muffler (no pun intended).

If you buy your packing from Big Gun, you will never have to utter a bad word while installing the new packing ever again.  This is very cool stuff, the new packing used by Big Gun is wrapped inside a Kevlar bag and then the entire bag is wrapped around a cardboard tube that is a little bigger around than the baffle...

...you merely open the muffler, remove the old packing, slide the baffle into the cardboard tube, insert into the muffler and slide the cardboard out.  Mike assures me the best part of this is you can pack your Quiet Series with this new packing only once a year.  The new stuff is that tough.

So, you no longer have to spend a day using words that would make a sailor blush.  I know what you're thinking, this stuff has got to be expensive right?  Nope.  It runs under 25 bucks.
