Cover Me!

Story and photos by

Andy Cohen

For me to sit here and list all the things you could possibly Line-X would take me hours, possibly days.  Now I'm sure Line-X would love that however they would love it more if we got to the meat and potatoes of the story faster.  Line-X is a urethane based protective coating that once fully cured is somewhat akin to wearing a condom during sex, it still feels good but nothing is gonna harm your valuable asset.

That being said, it is important to understand just how Line-X is applied and how well it works.  Line-X is sprayed out of a high pressure gun at just about 165 degrees, and will eventually get to about 190 degrees as it cures.  It is hard to describe just exactly how it feels and by looking at the accompanying photographs you would think is very rough, it is not.  I has a rubbery feel to it and you can actually dig your fingernail into it, but because it is "self healing" once you remove your nail you will be hard pressed to see what you just did.

Abrasion and scuff resistance are part and parcel to its outstanding qualities and it is difficult to dent a part coated with Line-X as well.

Lets watch as Pat Johnson and Arturo Vizueth of Line-X pull out all the stops and cover our KLR.

This is what I brought them, a box full of parts.

Its almost impossible to differentiate between the background of our website and the Line-X...coincidence?

Line-X coats between 1/16" and 1/8" thick.

Here Pat is seen prepping the parts, the key is in the prep work.

Arturo hands are a blur as he sands the plastic parts in an effort to guarantee 100% coverage.

The tail section of the KLR is scuffed up pretty good, the deep scratches ensure the Line-X will stick to the plastic.

Each part must be scuffed, fortunately the KLR doesn't have that much detail work.

The single biggest part of the bike, it's massive 6 Gallon tank.  It is hard to tell in this pic but the cap is taped over so the key will still fit in the lock.

The rear grab handles.

The front fender was a bit of a pain to prep and shoot because of the vents in the rear of the fender.

Becaue the gun is pressurized sometimes it helps to have an assistant hold the parts to keep them from blowing away.  Here Arturo holds the fender for Pat.

My 5 year old son thinks his dad owns the Batcycle.

There are a few pitfalls one must take into consideration.

The thickness of the Line-X will cause you to have to purchase longer bolts and screws to reinstall the plastic.  The only screws long enough were the ones for the front fender.

The Line-X coating will allow you to continue beating your KLR unmercilessly and still have a great looking bike at the end of the day.  The rugged good looks of the Line-X alone are worth the price of admission and just in case you didn't want basic black Line-X can shoot it OD Green or a host of other colors should that not be good enough for you.

Use without permission really pisses us off and causes us to call our lawyers.  If you want to use pictures or likeness' of our vehicles all ya gotta do is ask and let us know where to find it.  We're really a pretty easy going bunch of people but we spend a lot of money on our vehicles and ideas and our attorneys tell us stuff like that is against the law allowing us to sue you for lots of money...yadda, yadda, yadda.  Is this a great country or what?
